March Forward:  Brewing a Fairer Future for Women & Girls

As we mark International Women’s Day (IWD) for yet another year in 2025, we feel it’s important to recognize and reflect on the advancements made towards gender equality.

At the same time, however, we also need to acknowledge the work that still needs to be done, and how it’s extremely important to stay motivated as we March Forward and continue to strive for systemic change for women and girls.

As stated by UN Women Australia - “We’re simply not where we should be, and it’s time to turn promises into progress”.

At Coffex, we believe that every cup of coffee tells a story. We also know that enjoyment of our favourite caffeinated beverage simply wouldn’t be possible were it not for the incredible efforts and contributions of women across the coffee industry… from the farmers and labourers who cultivate and pick the beans, to the baristas and business leaders shaping the future of coffee.

Supporting Women in Coffee & Fairtrade Certification

Around the world, women play a vital role in coffee production, with up to 90% of field work and up to 80% of harvesting activities being carried out by women. Yet, only a small number of coffee farms are actually operated by women and they often face inequality when it comes to wages, access to knowledge and resources, land ownership, and decision-making.

That's why Fairtrade certification is so important - it ensures female coffee farmers receive fair pay, have opportunities for leadership, and benefit from programs that support gender equality. When you choose Fairtrade coffee, such as our Global Cafe Direct range, you're not just enjoying a rich and flavourful brew; you're also empowering women and their communities.

Meet Elizabeth Duna

“Last year, we had the privilege of hosting Elizabeth Duna, a Fairtrade coffee farmer from Papua New Guinea, at our roastery. As the first chairwoman coffee farmer in her region, Elizabeth is a trailblazer for women in coffee, leading with strength and passion.

During her visit, we took her through our roasting process, showing her how the beans she helps produce make their way from farm to cup.

One of the most special moments was when she held a pack of Global Cafe Direct, a brand committed to supporting Fairtrade farmers like her. It was a full-circle moment—recognising the hard work, dedication, and impact that Fairtrade has in ensuring a fairer future for women in coffee.

We celebrate Elizabeth and all women in coffee, not just on International Women’s Day, but every day as we continue to #MarchForward #ForWomenAndGirls globally”.

Elizabeth Duna is not only a coffee farmer, but also Chairwoman at the Fairtrade Certified Keto-Tapasi Progress Association in Papua New Guinea. She has dedicated her life to supporting farmers, strengthening her community and advocating for Fairtrade.

She is also the only female chairperson across the Fairtrade cooperative in the Asia-Pacific, overseeing farmers from the association, making sure they meet Fairtrade standards.

As she herself puts it:

“Fairtrade gave me the opportunity to lead and bring hope to my people”

We were delighted and honoured to have had the chance to meet with her in person.

Raise a Cup to a Fairer Future for Women and Girls

So, as you sip your coffee today, take a moment to give through and thanks to the women behind every bean. Their hard work, resilience, and dedication fuel our mornings and drive positive change across the globe. Join us in fussing a cup to a fairer future - because when women rise, communities flourish.

Wishing you all a Happy International Women's Day in 2025.
